ALTERNATE BASIC EDUCATION
Many children in Ethiopia have never attended school because they have fallen through the cracks of the educational system. These are predominantly the children of migrants, beggars and occasional day workers. In 2017, we enrolled 25 girls between the ages of 4 to 12 in our academic year program. Likewise, our summer program helped 26 girls between the ages of 4 and 13. Once the girls complete the ABE program, we negotiate with the local community and school to integrate the girls into the public school system. Since the girls are predominantly from migrant families, which lack the necessary documentation, such as birth certificate or other supporting documents, the system is not readily available to them. We help them through this process.
Our ABE program includes:
- Reading
- Basic Math
- English
- Amharic
- Playtime
- Naptime
- Personal Hygiene
- Social Integration
- Nutrition
